QR code Character Limit
Summary: QR code data capacity depends on the printed size (surface area) of the QR code and the type of data encoded. This article answers the question, “How much data does a QR code hold?” |
In the list below, the maximum characters (symbols) a QR code can hold are based on QR code version 40 with error correction capacity at level L. QR codes use the Reed–Solomon error correction algorithm.
- Maximum characters for QR code having only Numeric data: 7,089 characters
- Maximum characters for QR code having Alphanumeric data: 4,296 characters
- Maximum characters for QR code having 8-bit Binary data: 2,953 bytes
- Maximum characters for QR code having Kanji/Kana: 1,817 characters
- Version 1, 21×21, 10-25 alphanumeric chars
- Version 2, 25×25, 20-47 alphanumeric chars
- Version 3, 29×29, 35-77 alphanumeric chars
- Version 4, 33×33, 67-114 alphanumeric chars
- Version 13, 69×69, 259-619 alphanumeric chars
- Version 31, 141×141, 1150-2677 alphanumeric chars
QR code error correction capacity (approximate)
- QR Code Level L can error correct a QR code that is 7% unreadable
- QR Code Level M can error correct a QR code that is 15% unreadable
- QR Code Level Q can error correct a QR code that is 25% unreadable
- QR Code Level H can error correct a QR code that is 30% unreadable
